Normally my lists begin with a question - this time being "What kills C'tan effectively" then working back from their. Whilst this list was mostly a teams list idea a combination of it working really well last week and exhaustion kept it the same for singles. What I wanted from a list was either something damage number so big it could threaten C'tan (which Chaos doesn't have a lot of in effective form but Blight-Haulers melta have to be respected at worst case scenario) or something damage 1 with re-rolls. Hence Blightlords and in particular their shooting output, an easy unit that fits my personal style (big tough brawly unit) and bolted onto a pretty standard Vectorium frame that went as wide on Drones as possible to help give as many tools as possible to counteract the 2 big hammers taking up all the points (Deathshroud and Blightlords.)

For those interested I have a full write up of two previous events with either same or very similar list elsewhere on the sight, but the TLDR version is it had won a 77 player RTT and helped Fire and Dice to 6th at Winter ITT with a combined 8-0 record across both events with a general gameplan of use Spawn and Poxwalkers to draw things in, use Drones to escalate then deliver overwhelming force with Terminators as needed to crush a flank/middle and drive on for the win.

Pregame thoughts - Reasonably confident. Have a big ranged advantage over Wolfs, and whilst Vindicator is nasty only one mean I can ignore, be prepared for it to take out 'something' and hope it low rolls. As always -1 damage blunts combat armies pretty hard so wait for opportunites. The map was also bit more condensed than UKTC varient - Beachhead had 3 terrain sets, UKTC and two different ruin sets that were similar to UKTC but had their own quirks. In this case it meant that one Drone body in the middle of a 'road' would easily stop all Thunderwolf movement and given I vauled Blight-Haulers least in the match up they were on early screening to block of movement to stop me tied up. I was tempted by -1 to hit contagion given the quanity of 4+ invuls but ended up with -1 save still (viewing it as psuedo ignore cover for my ranged weapons. After all -1 to hit stops some damage, but if you kill them all with -1 save they deal no damage. Always thought I'd be a good ork player with mentality like that. Otherwise was pretty much on standard DG plan - wait for the faster Wolves to commit, try and blunt the charge and counter attack with teleporting terminators.
| DG deployment - Similar to last week at ITT Prince stages near middle with expendable unit next to him (Blight Hauler in this case) to blunt any early charges whilst DG shooting spread outs. |
| Space Wolf Deployment - clustered around their own deployment zone with a Terminator unit + Vindicator in reserve. Vindicator in reserve allows me to be much more aggressive with my deployment. |
| DG win turn 1 and units move up to try and pick away at Scouts and get ready to contest objective. |
| Scouts survive mostly unharmed and Thunderwolfs prepare to flank my formation. |
| Tried to get a few more close in shots rather than the overview ones all the time. Not to perfect success though as playing takes priority over pictures! |
| Some early skirmishes in DG turn 2. Poxwalkers have already sticked objective at top left and Space wolfs left it alone so they retreat back out of shot. In the middle Blight Haulers clog up advance as Blight Drones chips away with Prince blocking way for Thunderwolfs. |
| Blurry shot - Thunderwolfs failed to kill the Spawn in DG turn leaving my Drones unable to be tagged. I move them around to take ideal positions to kill either the Wolfs or scounts. Blightlord teleport into Space wolf backfield and shoot Wulfen to death as I try and secure this flank early and try and fail and cheeky 9 onto Space wolf home objective. |
| Drones combine to deal a big attritional blow to Space Wolves but can't stop them holding objective. |
| Trying to overwhelm Space Wolf with options whilst Deathshroud are held back to counter attack any successful Space Wolf breakouts. |
| Feeling the pressure Logan and terminator friends move up towards the middle as they ponder how to deal with Blightlords. They end up moving Calvelry over along with Byorn which I think is a mistake - they could stop they with Interessors screening and tie them in combat with Byorn with no way to go but back. |
| Logan and Wulfen preparing to charge. |
| Vindicator and terminators join the frey from reserve to try and push back DG advance. |
| 3 photos of this event and this is the least blurry somehow. Blightlords are oathed shot by Vindicator and charged by Byorn. With -1 damage up I lose only a couple but don't deal any meaningful damage back. |
| Space Wolfs charge in but don't manage much damage to my Daemon Prince who interrupts to kill a couple of Wulfen that allows the Blight Hauler to cling to life and keept an extra asset for me. Wolfs deny me primary in middle but their go turn didn't deal a decisive blow. |
| Minor misplay from Space Wolf - they try a 9 inch charge into Poxwalkers but have Arjac up front. In my turn I can then Deep Strike 6 from Arjac and soften them up with shooting without making my charge longer which makes easier to play around fight on death (due to less models, not anything technical.) |
| Blightlords don't fancy grinding their way through combat so fall back as Spawn and Drones secure objective for now. |
| Attention have been diverted enough for DG elsewhere that I can't deal a decisive blow in the middle to Space wolfs but I chuck enough Drones at the problem to deny them the objective. |
| Deathshroud lose a couple to Arjac's fight on death but take them out to secure the flank and ensure DG are slowly edging out primary. |
| WHY IS THIS FLANK ALWAYS BLURRY |
| See, every shot its blurry! I mean Vindicator and Byorn team up to remove Blightlords whilst the Thunderwolf move into the middle. -1 damage again means they don't dislodge much but deny DG the objective. |
| Space Wolfs clear the middle in the beautiful crispness of photo that's away from the right. DG however in a strong position to counter attack as they move in for kill. |
| Space Wolf turn 4, in desperation Combi-Weapon Lieutenant goes in for a technically possible attempt to get the objective (a tempting target) and deny be primary by killing 10 Poxwalkers in combat with 5 sustained attacks. He doesn't manage it. |
| Space wolf counter attack on the right meets a fateful end at the hands of Fleshmower drones finally chewing through them. |
| The collapse of the right flank gives DG edge in middle as Space Wolf can only defend their deployment objective. Vindicator has one last attempt to break into middle but combination of body blocking and Multi-meltas ends the attack. |
| DG can't get to Space Wolf objective but its still a solid win. |
Final Score - DG win 84 -67
Postgame thoughts - Took awhile to secure a win, think I'd gotten used to hitting Marines without as much 4+ invuls and the mobility of the Wolves with easy fall back and charge kept them in the fight. I might have misplaced my Blightlords in this brick in this one, they killed some Wulfen and threatened home keeping Wolves pinned back, but they could have probably avoided committing to them and body blocked them (which Bjorn did pretty much solo) instead of going in with Thunderwolfs. Blightlords kept the pressure on Wolves, but for such an expensive unit they didn't kill much or score anything so feels like a waste. That aside broadly went as expected - Space Wolfs couldn't push through DG and whilst I couldn't deliver a killing blow effectivly as I would have hoped, I out grinded them in the middle and after some bad secondaries turn 4 for Wolfs managed to secure win.

Pregame thoughts - Well before I saw the list and only saw Custodes I was worried about how many Land Raiders they had following the - 1 is good for DG, 2 Drawish, 3 is Bad for DG formula from Teams last week. I guess 1 made it good match up, although was expecting much more infantry in a Wardens list! Interesting match up - 1 save contagion easy pick, and Blight Haulers the key to the match up about the Grenade Drones certainly useful as well with Fleshmowers going to be the sacrificial pieces alongside normal spawn/Poxwalker screens. I should be able to draw Custodes more effectively than they can to me and whilst their combat is much nastier than Wolves (increased damage makes -1 damage less effective) its not that crazy still.
| DG deployment - Spawn and 'expendable' drone (this time fleshmower) up front to protect the Blight Haulers who can threaten middle/top left objective. |
| Custodes deployment - Land Raider can pick angles from the back whilst various Dreads deploy close to line. |
| Custodes go first and stage up. I put Poxwalkers on objective to block their way and start to soften up Telemon with my shooting. Daemon Prince charges as Dreadnaught in the middle, killing it but it comes back to life. |
| Ressurcted Dread murders my spawn. Land Raider move up to shoot my Prince in the middle and I Rapid Ingress Blightlords to Lone opp him and provide back up option to deal with Telemons next turn. |
| DG turn - I can't get to this flank but Drones keep Custodes honest as Prince charges Land Raider. it overwatched for something like 6 damage to soften my Prince up! |
| Elsewhere DG deliver a brutal turn. My guns kill Telemon and its Dreadnaught friend near objective 5 to secure flank and Blightlords kill another to pressure |
| Custodes under severe pressure and still have Deathshroud in reserve to challenge any counter attack they made. |
| Dreadnaughts manage to clear the Blightlords in Custodes turn, so Deathshroud teleport in whilst my various Drones stage as they try to position for next turn. |
| Feeling pretty comfortable on scoreboard but Callidus manages a hero play teleporting to my backfield and charging my Tallyman to slow my scoring. |
| Still its cold comfort for Custodes as their backfield gets crushed by Deathshroud. |
| Fleshmower drone comes to deal with annoyance of the Callidus. Even if it doesn't kill it, no way for the assassin to hold the objective. |
| Objective 1 remains under Custodes control but DG control or contest the rest. |
DG win 85 - 64.
Postgame thoughts - Solid win for DG. Spearhead has some nice tricks (return to life/fight on death) but they didn't really matter. DG hit harder, had better shooting and reasonably even mobility. Whilst the score line was near identical to previous game felt so much more in control and for more longer and wasn't ever really worried after my turn 2 shooting about the result.

Pregame thoughts - Purge might not be a bad mission for DG typically but never one I relish, one of two potentially awkward missions in the pack. I've gotten reasonably familiar with Dark Angels thanks to local club games (Hi Matt/Lawrie) and was sure than DG did out grind Dark Angels in the middle. In particular Spawn could be a real nuisance for Dark Angels, at T7 without infantry keyword their terminators wounded on 5 and with -1 damage could potentially keep Deathwing knights tied up if needed. DA had two ways to break the deadlock - either the Lancer could kill enough quickly enough to take out Drones, but similar to Wolves with only one real shooting threat I was happy enough to ignore it if I had to and given I outshoot DA elsewhere it had to be respectful. The big issue would be the Lion, fights first with high damage/mobility was an issue and was the one real win condition for Dark Angles. Thankfully Blightlords shooting was about as perfect as could get into him. Plan was pretty simple then - set up trades, target Lion with Blightlords deep strike were possible and counter attack after blunting initial swing. I went first so had to be bit more aggressive on Purge but still felt I had a strong match up.
| DG deployment. Poxwalkers on top objective with drones spread out to block deepstrike/threaten firing lanes. Prince as ever in the middle. |
| DA deployment with reserves at back of shot. As ever both squads of terminators in reserve for DG. |
| DG win first turn which is a pain on purge. Drones move up to try and find some lines for next turn but chip away at Jump Pack Intercessors. Spawn threaten Heroic intervention for Poxwalkers against JPI aggression (although not for Lion!) |
| Cautious on centre/right of objective with just spawn going on objective to gets things started. |
| No kills for DG turn 1 and its over to Dark Angels. |
| Dark Angels leave my Poxwalkers alone and instead focus on right, putting Impulsor loaded with Azreal and friends. Lion and combi Lieutenant provide some threat against HI. On my turn I move spawn up to try and tease out Lieutenant back but he holds firm. |
| Not much action on left so I send Fleshmower drone into middle a second and decide to push. Lancer will have shots on something next turn but doesn't matter if it can see one or 5 drones so might as well get aggressive. |
| Blightlords time! Lion is protected from my drones shooting by Lone opp from Lieutenant. I open with full re-roll blightlords and kill the Lieutenant and chip away 6 wounds on Lion thanks to an impressive spike in mortals from the Reaper cannon. With the Lone op out the way my drones finish off the Lion for huge early swing to DG. |
| Things get even better when my Blight Hauler kills the Impulsor (dramatic explosion aftermath brought along by Marko.) I made sure to shoot this after all the shots into the Lion incase I did kill the Impulsor and the Inner Circle gave him lone opp again. |
| Early hammerblow against DA and they feel need to counter attack best they can. |
| DA stressed across all 3 centre objectives, although have Rapid Ingressed a Deathwing Knight unit behind central ruin to contest it. |
| See, told you their were Deathwing Knights their. |
| Reaper backs up and targets Blightlords after oathing than rather than targeting Poxwalkers who had crept forward for an action. Its felt like a mistake - although it killed 3 Blightlords including overwatch next turn it could have taken out an asset. Its not a game changing thing, but felt like a small mistake from DG pressure not to take a marginal trade (and deny me sabotage/an asset) and ignore the Blightlords. |
| Instead 2 JPI's charged with the task of killing 10 Poxwalkers with potential Spawn Heroic. Not were the game was won/lost by any means but especially on purge felt like missed chance. |
| Inner Circle were worried about Blightlords overwatch, not unreasonably so but meant they had to kill Spawn only. Deathwings went into Prince to minimal effect leaving Dark Angels exposed for DG turn. |
| Reverse shot of battlefield as DG go all in for the kill. |
| Hurrah I remembered another zoomed in shot! Deathshroud and various drones move in to take out the Deathwing in the middle. |
| Inner circle take a salvo of Blight Launcher grenades and Blightlords shooting cutting through them leaving Blightlords free to charge the Impulsor. They don't kill it but leave it very damaged. |
| Deathshroud and friends make short work of Deathwing in the middle leaving DA pinned back. 5 units killed in the turn to leave DA with impossible position to catch up on kill more. |
| Side on view of battlefield. |
| ATV moves in contest objective |
| Faced with a horde of bad options Deathwing try and protect their home objective. Spawn are killed in shooting and they end up charging into the middle. |
| Deathswing barge into the middle but meet the immovable wall that is the foot Prince. |
| Blightlords make good use of the explosion token again as they kill the Impulsor. |
| DG turn - its full send to try and get DA home objective. A drone charges onto it but can't out OC the remnant of DA. It matters little when they get tabled next turn. |
DG win 96 -44
Postgame thoughts - Pretty brutal from DG, with similar style game to Custodes one before with this won with a decisive turn 2 shooting phase. This time the Blightlords taking out both the Combi-Lietutant and dealing 6 damage to the Lion softening him for drones to finish after the Lone-Op aura. DA didn't really have any way to punch through after that and it became a race to try and get to DA's home objective.
So after 3 fun but exhausting games time for food and heading back to premier inn for meal with team captain Byron, Paulie (Sky Serpent) and my brother Lachlan who had been at event AoS'ing. Was joined at breakfast next morning by James Grover of Goonhammer fame and had a fun natter (their were 3 5-1's results across and a 4-2 record across the 40k players across the meals, clearly something good in the water at the inn.) Sadly the mood was ruined on way to event when some asshole had smashed my brothers car rear window with a rock and he had to drop to sort it out.

Pregame thoughts - Played a few times into Rage-cursed Onslaught now and I'm sure its slightly DG favoured. -1 damage into damage 2 combat army is obviously great but BA have such a speed advantage and just so many attacks and Lance they can power through it and I can't disrespect the damage they put out in the same way I potentially could from Space Wolfs. Entered with same broad plan - keep terminators in reserve to force BA to have to respect their counter attack and wait for BA to engage and try and punish with interrupts/-1 damage. I went first turn which was a mixed blessing - it meant only one turn without terminators so less worried about BA rushing me down, but gave them end game scoring.
| Blood Angel deployment across the line with Sanguinary Guard with fights first in the middle. |
| DG win first turn as Spawn scout up |
| I put up screen, move the Spawn back and pass the turn over. |
| Ordering mistake by me lead to this - I moved my spawn up before advancing my Poxwalkers. Could have screened the Prince better moving the Spawn after to cover the gap. Its not a big mistake here (I don't mind BA coming at my Prince, again screening the drones behind next to a more exapendable drone in the match up) but something could have played around. I'll pretend it was a glorious bait set up. |
| Scouts and Spawn play peek a boss, scouting back and forward on the objective early on. |
| Even with -1 damage to blunt some of them, Death company hit like a truck. They multicharge in, killing the Poxwalkers and when a single Evisrator kills the blight Hauler I worry i'm in trouble. However Prince only takes 5 and alongside the Fleshmower drone DG take out majority of the Death company. |
| Overview going into DG turn 2. BA stay back to screen out DG terminators from arriving but stop DG scoring any primary. |
| Spawn get a little lucky retaking the objective from Scouts, they low roll attacks (even with a cp re-roll only do 7 between them) and kill 1 leaving BA with the objective...until they kill with 2 their mortals after scouts attack back to just deny BA primary. |
| I can't screen everwere (without defensivly deep striking terminators) so I make my peace with Dante arriving somewere my side of board and let them Rapid Ingressd very top left of board, further from my objective as possible. |
| I can potentially 6 inch Deepstrike deathshroud into Sangiuary guard...but with fights first its not an option i'm tempted to unless i'm desperate. |
| Dante's squad moves up. Score is even still and i'm aware BA have both extra mobility and last turn scoring so scoring pressure is on me to make first move. I don't any good deep strikes into BA lines so I defensively deep strike Blightlords to threaten overwatch on Sangiuary guard in my lines and get them ready to pressure middle objective next turn. |
| I have less assets on the right and can't effect BA staging so been happy to play slow here for as long as possible. Sanguinary guard move in to take out spawn. |
| Lemartes Death company moves up to take out drone in the middle. |
| Saniguary guard forced the issue here and I have to respond with Hauler/Drone to ensure I have enough OC to take objective if they low roll against the invul. They don't, but I also hope its enough to take the Sternguard. |
| Blightlords spend their turn overwatching Dante's sanginuary guard killing 2 and likely saving a Drone's life. They they move in with Prince and deal a point blank salvo into Death company |
| No space for Deathshroud so I keep them in reserve preparing to Rapid ingress them as latest possible chance. |
| Its a good turn, but little bit of fumbling the landing when Death Company spike a few saves to leave Lemartes alive. |
| Still pressure is back on BA to respond, and they can either stay back and give me primary or allow Deathshroud to teleport behind them. |
| BA go for full pressure (right option) and Deathshroud teleport behind ready to take BA home objective. |
| Can't say how much it annoys me that Blightlords get wounded on 2's by Sangiary guard with all the buffs (Captain str boost, strat str boost and lance) and even with -1 damage activated it takes a chunk out of them. |
| I'm unable to break the scoring deadline as JPI and sternguard fight their way into the middle. |
| My turn 4 and things are very tight. Daemon Prince is dead and Blightlords have to fall back to allow my Blight Launchers shots into Sanguinary Guard. |
| 3 and the Captain survive the onslaught, I try make it awkward for Sanguinary Guard to Pile in (as they still have fights first) keeping Blightlords close to force 1 them to pile in and bring Blightlords back into the fight despite falling back or not attack, it elects not to fight keeping one out of the fight and the 3 that can divided between targets. The Fleshmower kills a couple but Sanguinary guard survive the fight. |
| I can't stop BA holding the objective and fall back to try and bodyblock their way to my deployment as best as possible. |
| I have to use my CP on a battleshock and with Tallyman apparently having an off day my CP economy is limited. Deathshroud scare me with they roll a 1 with first dice on their 4 in charge but thankfully get 3 on the other to take BA home objective. |
| Its neck in neck on scoring as BA keep pushing on south flank and JPI move in to deny DG primary in the middle. |
| Captain and Sternguard smash through 2 drones and pressure is on DG. I start turn 5 a point behind. I draw area denial so I can't send Blightlords down to take out Sternguard assuring they will be alive for BA turn. |
| Deathshroud at least can burn the objective easily enough for 10 points. |
| I have assassinate as one of my secondaries. I charge every free drone into last Sanginguary guard and the Fleshmower finally get them and I can breathe easier. |
| Having seen DG get max point turn, BA draw some poor secondaries, can't get onto objective to burn easily and go kill my tallyman as their final turns ends anti-climatically. |
DG win 81-59.
Postgame thoughts - Much closer than score line suggested which flattered me. Went into turn 5 a point behind and with BA having final chance to score and with last turn scoring in their favour was a scary point to be in. Thankfully I just about managed a max point turn and killing Dante to secure Assassinate and running BA out of effective assets to score and their last turn ended up being a fizzle as a result allowing a more comfortable than expected final score. Blightlords defensive deep strike and overwatch was probably the key moment, blunting the BA turn and forcing them to have a big go turn in response allowing Deathshroud to take BA home objective next. Really good game and just able to get over the line.

Pregame thoughts - Well my time to really worry about -1 damage list. If I had to play this list Terraform was the one to do it on. I have more units and I can pick away at the little stuff well and hopefully get some easy terraform points as a result. The bad news - well the rest. Sweeping engagement gives C'tan some easy staging and I don't really want to engage the Doomsday Arks in a long range duel. Two real avenues for this - either throw Terminators at the C'tan and hope they tie them up (not something I love, especially with how strong the Necron OC game is so I went with plan B - try and force C'tan forwards and counter attack with Blight Haulers. This was fine, but risky - it mean the game was going to be decided by 4+ invul rolls as if they go well I have enough invuls/assets of my own to overwhelm a singular C'tan or King, if it bounces then I won't have enough damage to deal with all of them. Given amount of invuls I went -1 to hit for only time in event, although given the of hitting on 2's with +1 to hit it almost didn't matter either.
| DG deployment. Catuious to hide from DDA with Blight Haulers central to counter C'tan advance on middle objective. |
| Side on view of Necron deployment, very centrally focused. |
| DG win turn one, get area denial for the only time its likely to be possible and start to terraform objectives. |
| 3 terraformed objectives and staging is extent of turn and its time for Necrons. |
| Necrons move up in response. Minor win that their shooting doesn't take out Poxwalkers forcing Flayed ones to charge meaning objective stays terraformed. |
| I play turn 2 catuiously, trying to take the game slow and sneak primary were I can with terraforms but deceiver finds a spot to Rapid Ingress. |
| Thefleshmower drone also fails to kill Flayed ones and is in danger of giving Necrons primary. Given the CP I have possibly should have tank shocked to be sure and now allow any reanimate shenigans. |
| Spawn pulled back to screen Deciver from this part of board, DDA advances up to steal the objective. |
| Necrons going send and I respond with Blightlords ready to take fight to Wraiths so I don't lose the flank. Necrons clear the middle and kill my Tallyman to deny me any primary (bar some terraform ticks) |
| Its go time for DG. Deathshroud come in, hoping to take out Destroy and deny Necrons primary with some optimistic shooting (they don't) and charge the DDA and kill it (they don't) |
| With Flayed ones living (and with my drone shot to Death Necrons get to re terraform the objective) I have to send a Blight Launcher drone to deal with them and have a second as back up (if I charge Nightbringer or Nekrosor HI and I lose objective on OC regardless.) |
| Blight Haulers swarm around Deciver - time to see how hot 4+ invuls are. Feels like the game will be decided on this and I hate that feeling. |
| Blightlords kill a few Wraiths off the objective who then reactive out of charge range. Its a shame I can't kill them, but Wraiths stay out of the game till turn 5 after this with only minimal impact so its almost like a free kill at cost of 1 tick of primary turn 5. |
| Deathshroud and Blight Hauler drone charge into DDA but its 4+ invuls are hot and it doesn't even need to battleshock. |
| Deciver tanks the Haulers invlus very well (triple one on one Haulers Melta/missile really felt bad plus a failed cp) and I bundle it with bodies to deny Necrons the objective. My big go turn and I've only killed 3 Wraiths and 3 Flayed ones. Its now a scramble for points for DG as I won't win attrition from here. |
| Necrons prepare their counter attack. |
| DDA falls back and has enough OC to deny DG primary. |
| Silent King and C'tan move onto middle and I avoid any thought of holding middle again. |
| I'm down on attrition and points are equal. I can't stop the middle so I scramble for every other objective with Prince trying to take out DDA (failed charge after it moves away from shooting but means its not on objective.) |
| Deathshroud make 8 charge onto Necron home objective to deny primary after killing sole destroyer. Feels such a waste of their killing potential but have to focus on scoring. |
| Necrons ignore the Blightlords who have to be content with terraforming and cleansing over next turns. Blight Hauler melta take out Deceiver but remain out of position. |
| Nightbringer charges prince who survives and manages to interrupt and kill Nekrosor. My drone ensures I get some points as well as Prince living means Nightbringer can't get onto objective. Silent King fails to kill all the Deathshroud but charges, keeps them in combat |
| DG final turn, Necrons are going to have a big turn on primary and basically need a nil on secondarys to lose. I elect to try and keep as much in combat as possible, trying to play around action secondaries and at least force Necrons to roll dice to win so Deathshroud stay in combat and my Lord of Contagion survives to keep King in combat. I do essentially 0 damage in my turn (not wanting Necrons to reactive move) and pass the turn. |
| Necrons after CP re-draw have Display of might and No Prisoners. Killing injured Drone and Prince gives them a win, failing to kill both and DG sneak a win by a point. Save my CP for re-roll and a hope to the dice gods Necrons low roll.... |
DG Lose 73 - 81 (to little surprise both died with Nightbringer next to them.)
Postgame thoughts - Aagh. I was really dreading my shooting phase and put off shooting the Haulers Melta's for as long as I could. When they low rolled (not that much of a under roll from me/over roll from Necrons) I was in scramble mode after to try and sneak as many points as possible but I couldn't manage. I was happy that I at least entered turn 5 with a outside shot of winning, it needed a real low roll from Necrons but they at least had to roll some dice and gave me a chance to scam them on invuls even if it would require some real low rolls.
Problem with Necrons is that they punish on dice so badly, "ah you under rolls, I slightly high rolled and now my C'Tan is back at full and I can't be chipped down." They aren't the worst top meta army ever but 13 C'Tan at top 8 tables at this stage did rather suggest bit overturned if the hype didn't give it away. If I played this map again I'd broadly do the same thing - allowing the Deceiver to Rapid so close was probably a mistake I could have avoided by chucking a fleshmower drone at the Space, but I didn't hate trading Tallyman for a shot to have Deciver over stretch and give me a chance to kill it in return even at cost of some primary as it got Blight Haulers into easy melta range. I guess having it do it a turn later gives me another turn of primary which helps keep it closer and gives me a chance to scam a win on points even if I can't deal with stat check, which for potential cost of a Fleshmower is probably a good thing. William ended up undefeated finishing third overall.

Pregame thoughts - I'll be honest game 6 I was pretty zonked to use the technical term and mostly functioning on auto-pilot and a mix of fox mints, slightly stale cheap croissants and carrots. Thankfully BA was a match up was I rapidly familiar with so didn't have to test my brain too much. Let them come at me, set up screens. Counter attack. Dreadnaughts did play a big role and were probably BA's 'out' in this one to take the win although Blood Surge is much less scary if you can keep shooting them when in combat. To this end I was more protective on my Blight Haulers than previously wanting them to target the Dreadnaughts. Supply drop is the other awkward mission given its random nature and the RNG wasn't too bad. I went first which was a shame (although again gives me chance to get terminators in early if BA go all in which is nice) but the turn 5 objective was closer to me so reasonably even.
| Deployment on the centre/right flank with Prince in position to stop BA aggression again. |
| And on the left flank Poxwalkers sticky objectives and provide a screen. I win first turn and its mostly a tame turn screening and charging the scouts on my right flank with spawn. |
| BA turn feels somewhat less reserved than my turn one! |
| Reivers end up changing position a bit but move up to take left objective. |
| BA charge my Blight Hauler, and my Prince HI to defend it. |
| A single poxwalker survives to make it to turn 2 for almost the first time! |
| With bring it down BA focus on my Drone but it survives on a wound and whilst they deal damage to Prince |
| DG start a really brutal turn. One of the Death Company Dreads moved up just outside my Drones melta threat range (not its entire range of its multi-meltas, just the 9 inch melta.) I shoot it with a Blight Launcher drone, giving it chance to touch spawn at cost of getting it melta range, which it declines. My 2 Blight Haulers one after another then pick it up outside of melta range (Ap 4 + contagation is a wonderful thing.) |
| And brutality continues on left. Lone poxwalker stops the other Dread getting to my half of board, whilst Deathshroud charge Lemartes unit sweeping to avoid -1 damage. They don't kill them all and take a hefty hit back still but BA have lost alot of damage. |
| Aftermark of DG turn on right and I still have Blightlords in reserve. |
| Sanguary Guard and Dread ready to contests middle/right. |
| BA move up, the Drone is obliterated by Sangiuary guard (something like 30 damage done before all saves done) but the Fleshmower drone survives the Dreadnaughts charge. |
| Death Company move in to try and fight Fleshmower drone and Prince. |
| Both survive thanks to -1 damage and they cut through |
| BA are fully commited so DG full send back at them with Blightlords teleporting in. |
| Last pic of the tournament. Blightlords almost kill all the Sanginguary guard in shooting by themself by when the Blight Launcher pop off and rest are mopped up without needing a charge. Spawn get onto BA home objective and I elect not to even shoot the Dreadnaught to make sure it can't surge. Lemartes is finished off by Deathshroud. BA start turn 3 with 2 models on table and some JPI in reserves. |
DG win 88 - 25
Postgame - Brutal win from DG, and thankfully didn't have to think too much as think we were both running on fumes. Managed to get some strong attacks in turn 2 with the Deathshroud charge taking out most of Lemartes unit and Sangugary Guard counter attack couldn't do enough by themself and lining up basically ever gun to ensure they died with huge overkill was a nice way to end of the event and such was the dominance of DG that the randomness of Supply drop never came into equation.
| Two certifications for Fire and Dice as me and Byron both picked up best in faction, we would have ended up 1st/Second if Chaos Superfaction had been taken into account rather than induvial armies. |
Almost an exact repeat of my 2025 Beachhead, 5 wins one loss against someone that podiumed in round 5 and ended at top Chaos player both year (although last time was CSM, this time Death Guard.)
So ended up 5-1 overall finishing 7th out of 212 players, just behind James Grover and above Byron who also won an for best in faction in case the picture above didn't load for some reason. Whilst this was pretty cool by itself, helped added even more coolness to the below Global rankings for 2026....
| Just feel worth pointing out that ITC ranking at this stage of season are perfect and I see no reason why we should continue them at this stage. Pretty cool to be ranked 2nd in world even if only briefly! It took a lot of restrain not to put this as the banner image. |
As for my list everything kinda of did its job. Including the previous version at RTT and the same list at ITT (write ups available on site) it went a combined 13-1 with only a minor loss to Necrons so it can clearly hold its own in current meta (especially into BA which I seemed to attract heavily.) Its odd that it felt like no unit ever killed its points worth - which is clearly wrong but it tended to be lots of things helping chip away at stuff over a couple of turns rather than say a vindicator blowing up a Dorn by itself. Theirs probably one random Blight Drone that only died once and picked up 400 points of stuff every game by itself that gets lost in the blur of Drone units swarming around. The signature unit of Blightlords as the most 'out their' choice was excellent, more so as a tempo piece and just reliable ranged damage than for pure damage and I wouldn't be tempted to swap them out for Morty as the closest comparable price point unit.
I like the idea of Morty in the list as well and would look at upgrading the Prince to him (although I hate idea of dropping Spawn/Drone to make up rest of points) who certainly never got his points back, but again he stopped so many units getting into my backfield and his CP economy along with Tallyman meant I always had enough CP to either -1 damage, interrupt or both to stop opponents pushes. If I went to an event tomorrow I'd probably try that change for changes sake (hail Tzeentch?) and get a little more damage otherwise I'd stick the same list if forced into a 'world cup'.
Next time probably be a monthish at Kent Teams tournament, very possibly with that list or similar (although New CSM leaks will test that resolve and I really liked the look a Khorne heavy PBZ list Byron played round 1 that I don't thinks actually good into current meta but looks fun.)
