Death Guard burn their way to winning the Woking Wargames April RTT

It had been awhile since I'd run any Death Guard at an event, but the April RTT at Woking Wargames was a great chance to do so. CSM weren't setting any fire alight in my heart (get to about 1000 points of nasty damage then feel sad for the last bit) and with codex hopefully coming soon it was time to look elsewhere. With a teams event in may I'd trying and enjoying Imperial Guard, but was still 'modernising' my collection and had a few too many proxies even for a relaxed tournament and whilst I had fun playing Imperial Guard, literally every opponent I'd played regardless of build (or lack of indirect) hadn't had fun.

Mortarion tangles with Custodes in the middle of the battlefield.

With that in mind I wanted to see wanted to see how well DG did into Necrons, feeling they had good options into Wraiths and Morty gave an interesting way to fight C'Tan. Given I knew Denis, one of the best Necron players in the country was at a RTT it felt like a chance to try them out. After a practice game against my still nameless brother's Necrons I decided I wanted as much 'fast' DG stuff as possible, some Deathshroud to hold the line and 2 Crawlers to shell - initially I'd run 3 and felt like I was really struggling to output as much damage as I'd liked against a direct target and ended up with this:

Basic plan was simple - 2/3 infantry characters to join Deathshroud which would switch game to game depending on opponent with last Deathshroud unit/Character going separate into deep strike to act as secondary scoring options and reactive threats. Mini Daemon engines to go upfield and set tempo whilst Morty and Crawlers hung back to take out targets as they popped up.

Secondaries - both players taking tactical

Pregame thoughts - Always scary playing Eldar, and a lot of big guns to take out my rather small force. On the other hand, only really the Avatar could safely sit on an objective (and Morty's aura helped counter some of its defensive abilities nicely) and 3 central objectives forced Eldar out to play - as did the threat of Mortars. Wanted to focus the big guns were possible and especially take out the Fire Dragons in the Falcon as highest priority. Given a relative lack of armour on Aeldari's side ended up taking -1 WB/BS contagion to try and force some close range shots to miss and maybe neuter the Avatars damage a little. I wanted first to get some mortar shots off, but lost the roll off.

Death Guard deployment - big Deathshroud squad and Morty in middle to take fight to Avatar with daemon engines in position to take objectives turn one over premium hiding spots (which were given to big tanks instead.)

Slightly blurry Craftworld deployment as they hug the ruins.

Eldar get turn one and scout upfield to get some early shots off.

Eldar get a pretty horrid set of early secondaries with Behind/Area Denial - but have deployed too far back to score either. Death Guard move up in response trying to hide Morty from too many shots with the big ruin whilst not being upset if a few can hit him.

Early attrition goes Eldar way - one of my Drones moves onto objective 5 and Avatar overwatches, uses a miracle dice and hits 4 times burning the Engine to the ground in my turn.

Deathshroud make a near max distance charge as does Blight Hauler into the Firedragons which had to disembark from the Falcon after taking several Entropy Cannon shots to put pressure on Craftworlds - although I just fall short of killing the Wave Serpent in the middle.

Left flank is certainly the sideshow at the moment, I try to Mortar the Bikers behind the building and let the Deathshroud/Predator take out the Shroudrunner but can only manage glancing blows on both. Some decent chip damage in my turn overall, but had hoped to take out a few more Eldar trading pieces.

Eldar move forward in the middle but keep the Wave Serpent in combat relying on Avatar to deal the bulk of the damage as the Guardians/Avengers unleash into Mortarion (out of shot.) Keeping Wave Serpent in combat was probably a mistake, but does stop a nasty overwatch threat.

Very blurry shot of the right flank - with only one model on objective and facing some scary guns I Rapid Ingress Typhus down onto the objective to ensure I control it.

Avatars goes into Deathshroud and wiffs hard - a combination of -1 to hit and wound and some great saves on my part resulting in no models deal and Deathshroud manage to take out the Wave Serpent and a decent chunk of the Avatar.

DG turn two - Morty goes in to bring his aura and combat potential to the Avatar - he gets overwatched by the Avengers having taken several Pulse Lasers/Bright Lances and Prism Beams to the face in Eldar turn and is only on a single wound. I deep strike my 3 man Deathshroud down behind the terrain to hid them from the big guns and present a counter attack threat onto objective 3/5.

I've lost most of my mini-daemon engines at this point but move up my Fleshmower drone to keep pressure on, even though it fails the charge its still helping deep Eldar back in their zone.

Mortarion charges into the Avatar and manages to take it out, the Avatar gets a measure of revenge as it explodes and sends Mortarion back to the warp.

Craftworld turn 2 - face with the prospect of taking a 7 flamer overwatch with full wound re-rolls none of the infantry fancies moving.

Craftworld abandon the left flank and focus on trying to push back DG from the middle, however the -1 BS contagion is affecting a large portion of their army and even with lethal hits from the last Shroudrunner they can't push enough damage through.

DG turn 3 - Fleshmower drones charges the Fire Prism but only does 2 damage, but Eldar can't contest the objective as DG run away with primary (Typhus hiding in the ruin out of shot just incase they manage something crazy.)

Deathshroud move upfield and start tearing there way through Craftworlds last line of defence.

Deathshroud force there way onto Craftworlds objective as the line crumples.

Craftworld line up some last shots as DG burn everything remaining to the ground.

Final Result - Death Guard win 100 - 32

Postgame thoughts - Couple of scary early turns but Eldar feeling compelled to skip an entire movement phase over the threat of Deathshroud overwatch following by the loss of the Avatar helped snowball a win. Sticky objectives was huge as well, I could push up aggressively and focus on taking out any Eldar with the speed to threaten objectives and pin them in - I'd initially wanted to target the Prisms earlier as a high priority but ended up focusing on the little units instead so I could push forward and keep scoreboard pressure up even when the attrition was painful. Thankfully it worked out well as Eldar never managed any control in the middle as a result.

My Secondaries - Tactical
Arthur's Secondaries - Fixed (Bring it Down/Deploy Teleport Homers)

Pregame thoughts - First time fighting Custodes in 10th, and an easy lock in for -1 save contagion. My understanding was this was a favourable match up for DG, although Custodes tricks and access to fights first was a real sticking point (I also paid no attention to Draxus which was a mistake.) On my side - not a lot of ranged damage outside of the Caladius (not to be confused with the Callidus) with the grav tank the only real threat to my daemon engines. Plan was simple - trade hard, and put the Sorcerer in the big Deathshroud unit to try and nullify most of the Custodes damage in combat.

Custodes deployment - clinging to the ruins/behind terrain with another block with the Blade champion out of shot in building to left of shot.

DG win turn one and move up - Drones take the flanks whilst I line up a couple of pot shots into the Calidus Grav tank

Caldius failed both 2+ Saves against Predators Autocannon, then fails invuls against the two Lascannon shots and is unexpectedly destroyed to give DG a lovely early scalp allowing DG Daemon engines an almost free reign against ranged damage.

Very happy with turn one with Daemon Engines on all objectives and Crawlers helping to screen out backfield from teleports - with Custodes having taken Deploy Teleport homers I want to bleed them out of units that can get into the middle and deny the backfield - hence keeping so much of my force huddled around it.

Custdoes move up as Bladeguard leads the charge - although wary of the Deathshrouds overwatch they move to avoid their line of sight.

Sisters unit takes the objective in the middle and deploys a teleport homer

Custodes advance onto the objective take control of it and manage to take Daemon engines down to 3 wounds from various shooting attacks.

Blade Champions Warden squad elects not to tangle with Deathshrouds overwatch and charges Predator, I pop -1 damage to keep it alive although its Vected by the Calidus Assassin. In the middle the Allarus manage a longish resurrection boosted charge into the Blight Hauler but can't remove it.

Custodes limit DG scoring but haven't done much damage in their turn, and I have control of objective 4 + home to get an early primary lead.

Predator falls back and Wardens move up towards objective 4. Aware there is a a lot of firepower coming there way they pop there FNP in the shooting phase but still take a heavy toll from the Deathshrouds flamers which get Ap boosted via strat to a profile almost tailor made for Custodes (Ap2, anti infantry 4+) and kill 3 of the Wardens.

Deathshroud flamers clear the Sisters in the middle and 2 squads engage with their Custodes equivalents. Only the Blade Champion survives the turn from the Custodes in shot.

Huge moment of luck on the right flank - face with a full Custodian Guard squad on the objective I fly my drone up off 5 to charge the Sisters and try and remove an asset. I shoot a Plageburster Crawler at them and it snipes two with its Entropy cannons, then manages 6 further wounds with the Mortar and Custodes fail all 6 4+ Saves to lose the squad entirly. The Drone fails its charge and isn't on the objective anymore but its a hell of a bonus for DG.

Custodes have taken a hammer blow and Trajann decides it go time as the Guard squad with Draxus moves up to join the fray. Typhus watches on from top of shot having deep striked down for secondary points in my turn.

Blade Champion has barley clung to life and falls back to deploy a teleport homer instead of fighting.

Custodes counter attack is pretty effective - Draxus's shooting kills 3 Deathshroud and almost manages to get the Lord of Virulence to boot by herself, Typhus takes some blow but clings to life and Mortarion gets a hefty clunk torn out by Trajann

Custodes had a decent turn, buts they are pretty heavily behind on scoring and attrition, DG move in to end the contest in the middle, Mortarion having to fall back to allow shooting into the Trajann's Warden who have to pop there 4+ FNP in shooting phase.

I'm confident of winning the middle so Deathshroud teleport in on the right to contest some Allarus as Plageburst Crawler lines up some shots into them.

Bladeguard Champions manages to take more blows than I'd like but his death was always assured with the Deathshroud close by. Trajann almost survives the turn but the Lord of Virulence manages to just kill him in combat (with the Bloat Drone bully charging Trajann so he can't cause much carnage next turn incase he survives.)

Overview shot of the battlefield going into Custodes turn.

Victory is beyond Custodes now - its about playing for points as they switch to a teams mentality.

I'd done well at screening out my deployment during early turns but I'd had to move units around to maximise into Wardens and left a space for Calidus to jump in and deploy a teleport homer.

Allarus resurrect a buddy and take fight to Blight Hauler as Deathshroud and Crawler prepare secure the flank next turn.

Draxus continues her excellent game taking out the Predator by herself and along with the Guard charge into Mortartion who is reduced to 3 wounds.

Mortarion takes out a couple of Guard, before falling back in my turn to allow DG to unleash another hefty flamer volley from the Deathshroud as Custodes are purged from the battlefield.

Only the Presecutors survive the turn for Custodes, they try one last pot shot to take our Mortarion but he just clings to life as DG take the win.

Final result - 99 - 49 win for Death Guard.

Postgame thoughts - So some real luck on my side at points which really helped snowball this. Taking out the Caldius tank from essentially a solo Predator volley turn was was pretty unreal with it failing all of its saves, including 2, 2+ saves against the Autocannons and second turn one of the Custodian Guard units failing 6/6 saves against a Mortal volley suddenly gave me control of an objective I had expected to be under Custodes control for a couple of turns. That said the 6 Deathshroud unit felt pretty terminal for Custodes, anti-infantry 4+ with Ap-1 and potential for ap2 ignoring cover flamers was just brutal and was able to destroy both Wardens squads in the turn they popped there 4+FNP as a result with some support - even with some better Custodes rolling it felt like the Deathshroud was just going to grind them down. The MVP for both sides though was Draxus, I hadn't played against her before and her killing a injured Predator and destroying 3 Deathshround and nearly the Lord of Virulence in a single volley solo wasn't something I was expecting.

Secondaries - both players went tactical

Pregame thoughts: So 2 big threats to work around here - the Aggressor squad (which posed serious threat to anything with there volume of shots and lethal hits) and Centurion squad which I wanted to play around there movement before forgetting about Vanguard allowing them to ignore that. 3  Central objectives make the game plan relatively simple - be aggressive, with large parts of my army deploying to the line without even worrying about the infiltrating Aggressor squad which ended up deploying defensively. I wanted to use the 'north' central objective to house a character to wrack up Empowered objective points and fight over the other two to wrack up a lead on primary and secondaries might be an issue against Vanguard with my slow second wave. -1 save contagion to play around AoC was the contagion pick and Sorcerer lead the 6 Deathshroud which deployed opposite the Bladeguard to counter there damage 2 and hit them in the counter attack.

DG part way through T1- pretty much everything apart from Crawlers deploying on the line. I'm highly unlikely to beat Vanguard on secondaries so need to force the primary as early as possible.

Ultramarine deployment - different styles as they hold back there Infiltrators/Aggressors from deploying upfield so I can't charge them as keep Eradictors in the midpoint of there deployment so I can't deep strike my reserves in whilst I elect to advance upfield and only screen out 3 inch deepstrikes on my home objective.

Blurry shot as DG move up, fire some mortar shots to negliable effect and pass the turn. Morty hangs back abit - I'm a little soft in the middle and if Morty can dissuade the Aggressors from getting close thats more valuable than getting him stuck in and I don't mind him taking a few shots.

Both of us have a pretty horror draw of secondaries turn 1 (BEl/BID for me, Cleanse/Capture Enemy outpost for UM) so Vanguard focus on damage on the shout of shot. Centurions blow away one Blight Hauler and Eradicators soften up another but the UM can't do much about the central/top objective.

Bladeguard charge in to take out the last Hauler as Deathshroud watch on, it was a shame to lose both Haulers (probably a bit too far forward, eager to get a single pot shot off) but it does leave the Bladeguard close to my big Deathshroud blob.

No pics of DG turn 2 - I cleanse two objectives and take out a Interceptor squad with combination of Drone Flamers and the Crawlers Mortars. Deathshroud charge into the Bladeguard - they low roll abit but do remove the squad as a threat to the objective. Vanguard have started to move up in response with the Aggressors in their turn aware DG have taken a noticable lead on primary.

Interceptors deep strike in Danger Close to threaten the objective - I'd used the drones more to position against a long Aggressor charge on Morty than screen the objective but could have probably done both.

Interceptors deep strike behind DG lines and line up shots into Mortarion.

It takes every available gun, but UM exactly manage to kill Mortarion with there last available shot into him. Seeing the Aggressors move up and Morty lined up as Oath Target I rapid ingress my Deathshroud in response so they can fight over the middle.

Losing Mortarion was a nasty blow, but Aggressors are committed. I have option to hang back and continue scoring and try and make them disrupt me, but I take the more aggressive option and move up my bodies in the middle. Typhus deep strikes onto the objective under the middle ruin at top of shot to keep empowering it which frees up the Deathshroud lead by Lord of Virulence to engage the aggressors.

I had meant to deploy my Predator on the field and it was only at this stage I realised I had forgotten about it - Jamie was kind enough to say it was in reserves and it at least meant it could choose its target now the Aggressors were in the open and came in on the top flank.

DG pile there combined firepower into the Aggressors and one Deathshroud + Fleshmower Drone manage to charge in as they take out the rest of the squad including both Characters.

DG have near complete control of the middle as Vanguard can't compete with the Deathshrouds killing power/resiliance in a head on fight.

Typhus continues his rather uneventful but effective tournament as he babysits the objective.

Its a scrap for any points as Interceptors charge in to my Crawlers trying to disrupt my backfield as the Callidus tries (and fails) to support them.

Centurions having been wracking up attrition all game as they teleport around and they almost cleanse the objective of Deathshroud with there killing power, but there inability to affect the primary has cost UM. DG destroy everything apart from the Centurions in there turn leaving them at full strength for the full game.

Final Score - DG win 98-28.

Postgame thoughts - Everything went pretty much to DG plan - grind them down in the middle and tank the rest! I never realistically considered attacking the Centurions - I couldn't get to them and wasting the odd mortar shot never felt like a good resource even if their output was very nasty. Otherwise DG were brutal in the centre, raking control of both edge objectives early in a position were they couldn't be pushed back and trading into the centre well before pulverising the Aggressor squad in a turn. It was pretty indicative of the game plan when in turn I moved one of the my units in the centre forwards and kept everything else just holding the middle - even with sticky objectives I wanted no way for Vanguard to teleport onto an empty objective.

With 3 wins out of 3 I ended up as only undefeated player and won the above trophy - rather pleasingly my round 2 opponent came second and my round 3 came third.

As for the list - it felt real good. Was a bit weird using Typhus exclusively as a secondary/objective holder piece like an expensive Nurglings (which were absent with half an eye on teams event having a Daemon player.) I really wanted to include a second Predator but points were awkward - there's nothing I wanted to drop and dropping 2 good units (probably the little Daemon Engines) for Predator and a chaff unit is probably a net blow unless I look at dropping Mortarion but then I'm much more worried about C'tan. There wasn't any unit that underperformed - Blight-Hauler probably the weakest link but were nice as establishing tempo and starting trading wars and the Bloat Drones weapon options might need tweaking but it felt like a really nice list overall even if bit worried how it would do against and Ironstorm/vehicle heavy shooting list (although it held up well enough against Craftworlds.) MVP was certainly the 6 man Deathshroud and whoever led them - vicious counter attackers into whatever they hit and their overwatch threat was a constant fear for my opponents.

Thanks for reading!
